In writing this section I want to go beyond explaining myself and my love for photography to making a comment on photography in general. Photography has been characterized as a medium for capturing light to express a form or image, it engenders visual communication - it acts as a means to express the [emotion] that a moment in time holds. A photograph can document a moment in history, express an idea, relay information, or simply provide entertainment for the viewer. My goal in the images being shared on this website is to have achieved one or more of these characteristics.

My interest in photography began when I had an opportunity, as a child, to use my family’s camera while on vacations. That interest has continued to grow and develop throughout my life. While mostly self-taught, I have read and studied the work of master photographers as well as followed contemporary photographers and artists. Moving from film to digital photography has enabled me to develop skills that cross over from photography into graphic design using photographs I have taken.

In my journey with photography, I have been fortunate to have shared my work with others in local galleries and on social media. I hope that you will enjoy the works I publish here, and that you will reach out to me with your comments and questions.

Many thanks,

JoAnn Woods
